Health Services: Flu/Illness season
With flu/illness season upon us we would like to emphasize our general practice for ill students:
    • Fever of 100 or more:  stay home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal without fever reducing medications.
    • Vomited or had diarrhea: stay home until 24 hours after the last episode.
    • Rash that may be disease-related or you do not know the cause: check with your healthcare provider before sending him/her to school
    • Started antibiotics: stay home until after a full 24 hour course of them.
    • Students not feeling well enough to participate in their normal school day due to illness: stay home to rest.

Keeping your child home allows him/her time to rest and prevents exposing classmates/faculty to possible illness. Also, please inform us of any illnesses your child is being treated for.  This allows us to track and report illness as required by the MN Department of Health.

At this time we are seeing an increase in illness.  Please report the symptoms your student is experiencing when you are calling them out ill.  This helps us determine when we need to report to the MN Department of Health.  This will also help us collect better data to report for specific illnesses that we are experiencing in our school district.

Checking in with...our Student Support Services Team
Our District employs counselors, school resource officers, social workers, and other professionals to provide appropriate services to meet the needs of individual students and families. We've asked them to share insight with families each month. For September, we are focusing on the importance of routines:

Kids thrive on routine and structure because it gives them a sense of predictability. When establishing a routine remember to make time to connect with your child each day, reflect on mistakes and celebrate successes. Using established routines as a guide and encouraging kids to take charge of their own routines gives them a sense of personal responsibility and self-sufficiency.

Some questions to think about when establishing a routine:

    • What do they need the most help with?
    • What can you expect them to accomplish on their own?
    • How much time is helpful for them to get everything done?

For more information, please contact the SHS Counseling Office, visit our SupportServices page and/or read more here.
