Summer often poses challenges for families as children lose access to meals provided at school, necessitating additional support for meal provision. While most families will receive these benefits automatically, some may need to apply. Please visit the MDE Summer EBT Website to learn more. If you are a parent of a student in 8th grade or younger...
Then you can also be your child(ren)'s sponsor for the Online Regional Qualifying Exams for the Middle & Elementary School National Geography Bee, National History Bee, and National Science Bee! The process works the same as outlined below in section 2, you would just fulfill the role of a sponsor instead of a teacher. This way students can compete even if a school is unable to find a teacher to give the ORQEs to interested students (though that is an easier method if possible).Section 2:
2. If you are a teacher or administrator for students in 8th grade or younger...
Then you can offer the free Online Regional Qualifying Exams (ORQEs) to any students at your school for the Middle & Elementary School National Geography Bee, National History Bee, and National Science Bee. Just go to www.iac-exams.com - you can log in with your past sponsor log in credentials there or reset your password if needed. The ORQEs are the first of the three stages for each of these three Bees and they take 20 minutes per subject. Students who then pass the ORQE for each subject (about 2/3 of all students nationwide do) then can compete at the Regional Finals which are held both in-person and online through early May. Typically parents pay for and take students to Regionals and Nationals if they qualify, so it's meant to be easy for schools and teachers to give them the chance to compete through the ORQEs!Students who finish in the top 50% at any Regional Finals for their grade level qualify for our 2024 Middle & Elementary School National Championships on Memorial Day Weekend in Orlando. We're expecting a record crowd of close to 2500 students and hope your students can be among them!

We are writing you from Vienna, Austria where we are organizing the 2024 International Geography Championships from July 13-20 this summer! Over 100 students have already registered: students can qualify by scoring high enough (75 or better) on the high school-level National Qualifying Exam for the National Geography Bee (this exam is open to middle & elementary school students too), by finishing in the top 25% of a regional-level National Geography Bee tournament, or by finishing in the top 50% at Nationals. IGC is an amazing week of sightseeing, competitions, and geography fun with students from around the USA and the world, and we hope you might consider joining us here in Austria! If you have further questions feel free to contact: Lori Dornburg, email.
READ Act calendar changes
Families should check their inboxes for an email sent April 19 from Interim Superintendent Tom Lee. During the 2023 State Legislative Session, the Reading to Ensure Academic Development (READ) Act was passed that requires school districts in Minnesota to train their teachers (up to 140 hours) in the Science of Reading beginning after July 1, 2024. This training needs to be completed by July 1, 2026. In order to meet this state-mandated requirement, districts across the state are needing to alter their school calendars to allow for the appropriate amount of time for this training to occur. On April 15, 2024, Sartell-St. Stephen’s School Board approved an altered calendar for the 2024-2025 school year to accommodate this training requirement. Over the next two years, our district’s best option will be to utilize a combination of scheduled professional development days and monthly early release days to ensure the required teachers are trained by the state’s deadline of June 30, 2026. The following early release dates - all Wednesdays - have been added to next school year’s calendar: September 25, 2024; October 30, 2024; November 27, 2024; December 18, 2024; January 29, 2025; February 26, 2025; and March 19, 2025. The calendar is available at www.isd748.org/calendar on the lower left or via this link. -

State Mandated READ Act and Calendars
Be sure to check your inboxes for yesterday's important email about Minnesota's Reading to Ensure Academic Development (READ) Act, additional teacher training, and potential calendar adjustments (seven early release days). Because our K-5 students may be the most in need of supervision during these early releases, we are asking families who will have students in K-5 in Fall 2024 to complete a form (www.isd748.org/K5READactPlanning) to help us plan for transportation and staffing. Please note: The form is NOT an official request for transportation; it is for initial planning purposes for our seven potential early release days. Please provide your feedback by Tuesday, April 2 so staff may review and determine a plan that best serves the needs of family schedules and, ultimately, enhances student learning.Volunteers needed: try a new bus app
Have children who regularly ride the school bus to/from school? Willing to provide helpful feedback so families can have a smooth experience with a new mobile app? After Spring Break we will be exploring an optional app for families that uses GPS technology to track the location of our buses and are looking for a few volunteers to help us try this new app. If you are interested in learning more, downloading the app, and giving your feedback about your experience, please share your information here. Volunteers who complete the form will receive an email in April with details to try the mobile app. -

If you have further questions on our middle & elementary school level events, please contact ems-info@iacompetitions.com
And if you're particularly interested in geography (or know students who are)...
If you have further questions feel free to contact: Lori Dornburg, email
