    ISD 748 Families:

We are eagerly awaiting the start to our 2022-23 school year and wanted to share some important updates regarding Food Service/Nutrition Services.

Meal Pricing Returns - No More Free Lunches

    • Beginning in September 2022, meal pricing for students will revert back to the way it was before March 2020 due to the federal Child Nutrition COVID waivers expiring.
    • Breakfast and lunch will still be available to students daily; however, meals will not be free to all students. That means that families will need to complete the Application for Educational Benefits (online and in Skyward Family Access) to determine if they are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
    • The students who do not qualify for free or reduced-priced meals must pay full price for breakfast and lunch:
      • Breakfast - Kindergarten: free due to state funding; Grades 1-12: $1.50; and those who qualify for reduced-price meals: $0.00
      • Lunch - Kindergarten-Grade 5: $2.80; Grades 6-8: $3.00; Grades 9-12: $3.10; and those who qualify for reduce-price meals: $0.00
    • All students will scan their Student Identification Card at the point of sale for the cashier to ring them up. This means ALL students must bring their student ID cards to school daily. Please refer to our Nutrition Services Handbook for more grade-specific details.

Low Balance Alerts - Customize in Skyward Family Access/Skylert
Low balance alerts will go out on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to inform families when their account has a remaining balance of $20 left. These alerts will serve as a reminder to add money to your family account for your student’s meals. You may customize your notification preferences by logging into your Skyward Family Access account and selecting “Skylert” on the left menu.

    • Instead of receiving low balance alerts, you may opt in to Auto Replenish through RevTrak.
    • Please strive to keep your child’s account balance positive! To check your student’s account balance, complete a Free and Reduced-price meal Application, or add money to your student’s account, please visit isd748.org/nutrition.

    Offer vs. Serve
Offer vs. Serve allows students to build a meal and take what they are going to eat. Garden veggie bars are available for students in grades 1-12, so students may select as many raw vegetables they’d like with their meal the first time through the lunch line. To view detailed guidelines from the Minnesota Department of  Education regarding Offer vs. Serve for breakfast and lunch meals, please visit isd748.org/OfferVsServe

    Summer P-EBT Benefit Deadline

If you have an incoming kindergartener or transfer student for the 2022-23 school year, the deadline to apply for free or reduced-price meal status to receive summer P-EBT benefits is September 2, 2022.

If you were already approved for free or reduced-price meals for the 2021-22 school year, you do not need to reapply in order to receive Summer 2022 P-EBT benefits.

Minnesota does not currently have guidance from USDA as to whether P-EBT benefits will continue into the 2022-23 school year.

Free Meals for Kids helps families and kids locate free healthy meals across Minnesota. The App is powered by GPS and shows locations of schools and community sites providing meals, with days and hours of operation. It also shows the distance and directions to the nearest site from your location. The App is updated regularly, even daily, to make sure the information is up to date. We count on you and MDE to make the information accurate. Please download the App (Apple or Google) and share it with families and others concerned about feeding kids this summer.

    Effective Friday, June 3, 2022
All NEGATIVE balance meal accounts must be paid in full.

    RevTrak Payments
RevTrak will be available for making payments throughout the summer. Auto-Replenish (via RevTrak) will be shut off on Friday, June 3, 2022 (12:00am), but will be turned back on September 6, 2022. RevTrak auto-replenish settings can be adjusted at any time.

    Year-End Remaining Meal Account Balances

Balances remaining in a student’s account at the end of the school year will carry over to the next school year. If the student moves to a new building, the balance will transfer. We encourage parents/guardians to check balances before school starts to ensure that there is enough money in the account.

    Graduating Seniors

Fund balances of graduating seniors will be automatically transferred to a sibling meal account within ISD 748. If no sibling is enrolled in the districtplease contact Sue Fibranz (320-656-3781 or via email) to request a refund or to donate the remaining meal account balance to our Have a Heart Account to help families that need a little help paying for meals in the coming school year.

Refunds of $10 or Greater (School Meal Accounts)

Requests for meal account refunds should be submitted by Tuesday, June 10, 2022 (2:00 pm) by filling out this form.

    Meal Account Purchase Histories

All customer purchase histories for school year ‘21-22 will be purged at the end of the school year.  Please be sure to print any needed student purchase history prior to Tuesday, June 7, 2022 (2:00 pm). While no cost breakfasts & lunches were served to all students in school year ‘21-22, your student(s) may have purchased a la carte.

Application for Educational Benefits (Free or Reduced Meals) School Year 22-23

As a reminder, families must reapply for free or reduced-price meals each school year. The application for next school year will be available online during the first week in July. Families can either complete a paper copy or apply online with Skyward Family Access.

4 Reasons to complete an Application for Educational Benefits:

    1. At this point, it is unlikely that students will continue to receive universal free meals in school year 22-23.
    2. Increased funding for direct student instruction for our school district.
    3. Athletic, technology, and activity fee reductions via ISD 748 and Community Education.
    4. Scholarships for school fees, testing & college applications.

Please contact our Food Service Department at any time if you have additional questions or need more help. We look forward to serving you.

    Sartell-St. Stephen ISD 748 families:

Please take a few minutes to read this important update from our Food Service department regarding potential menu changes and other items.

    Meal Benefit Applications
By completing a Meal Benefits application in Skyward, your family may:

    • Receive free or reduced rates for fees (ISD 748 Community Education, college applications, academic tests, etc.).
    • Generate compensatory revenue for our district. Schools must use compensatory revenue to meet the needs of students who are behind their peers including: remedial instruction, instructional materials including digital learning and technology, bilingual programs and additional teachers and teacher aides (click here to learn about the state requirements).
    • Make teachers in your school eligible for the federal Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program if they have outstanding college loans.

All families are encouraged to apply even though breakfast and lunch meals are free this school year through an extension of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Many families are surprised to find they do qualify because the income thresholds for meal benefits may be higher than in other programs; please view the income guidelines from the State of Minnesota to see if your family qualifies.  Please complete your application in Skyward Family Access or PDF; please visit our Meal Benefits page for details or contact Sue Fibranz (via email or phone 320-656-3781).

Completing the application by December 15 allows us to calculate eligibility and report to the Minnesota Department of Education. This will not impact your students’ eligibility to receive free meals during the 2021-22 school year.

    Product Availability and Menu Changes
We continue to see nationwide supply chain and product availability shortages, impacted from the COVID-19 pandemic. Our food service department is capable of preparing for shortages and will continue to communicate with students, staff, and families if there are last-minute menu changes and product substitutions. Be assured meals will remain balanced, healthy, and plentiful. We ask for patience and understanding as we do our best to meet the needs of your children.

The School Nutrition Association provided a video to help explain the supply chain issues.

Interested in working while your student is in school?
The Food Service department is hiring! We have open positions at the Sartell High School, Sartell Middle School and Riverview Intermediate School beginning at a pay rate of $16.20/hr. Not interested in working everyday? We have a posting for a Food Service substitute at a pay rate of $14/hr. Please click here if you would like to access the open Food Service positions.

If you have any questions, please contact me using the information below.

Please take a few minutes to read this important update from our Food Service department regarding potential menu changes and other items.

    Product Availability and Menu Changes
As you may be aware, included in the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are nationwide supply chain and product availability shortages. Disruptions are due to a lack of availability of raw ingredients and labor to produce, unload, and transfer food products. Some food and/or beverage products normally provided to students may not be available or arrive as scheduled. Due to unforeseen circumstances, last-minute menu changes and product substitutions may occur. Be assured meals will remain balanced, healthy, and plentiful. We ask for patience and understanding as we do our best to meet the needs of your children.

The School Nutrition Association provided a video to help explain the supply chain issues.

Free Meals Continue this School Year
Sartell-St. Stephen School District is participating in the United States Department of Agriculture Seamless Summer Option to provide free meals to students this school year. This program provides additional support and flexibility for our district to continue serving meals to children while maintaining safety measures and managing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Menus and nutritional information are always posted on our District's Nutrislice website

    Meal Benefit Applications
The application for educational benefits can be completed at any time throughout the school year. Breakfast and Lunch are free for all district students for the 2021-2022 school year, however additional benefits may be available to families if they qualify. Please visit our Meal Benefits page for details; applications are available through Skyward or you can download a PDF.

Please contact me with any questions.

    Sincerely,

    Families:

Please be sure to read all of this message. It contains important details about Food Service for the 2021-2022 school year.

    FREE MEALS
All students in grades K-12 will receive free breakfast and lunch meals daily through the operation of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Seamless Summer Option for the 2021-2022 school year. Meal times for the upcoming school year can be found on page 5 in our Family Handbook.

    MEAL OPTIONS: OFFER VS. SERVE
Offer vs. Serve allows students to build a meal and take what they are going to eat. Garden veggie bars are available for students in grades 1-12, so students may select as many raw vegetables as they would like the first time through the lunch line.

Breakfast: A complete meal consists of at least 3 items. Note: some foods fulfill two nutritional requirements.

    • K-5 may take up to 4 items
    • 6-12 may take up to 5 items

Lunch: A complete lunch consists of at least 3 components

    • All grades offered 5 components
    • Federal law requires students to take at a minimum 1/2 cup fruit or vegetable; however, what they take in addition is up to them
    • Students are not required to select an entree or milk; however, they must have three different components on their tray.

Visit our Offer vs. Serve page for additional info including photos of two trays showing what students are able to select.

    PARENTS/GUARDIANS

    • Please review menus with your children to encourage them to try new foods. Our menus are school-specific and are hosted on Nutrislice (links available on our mobile app and website).
    • Meal Accounts:
      • If students want to purchase extra meal components at the primary level OR a la carte at the secondary level, they must have money in their meal account to do so.
      • Cash and checks will be accepted by the cashier; if you pay with cash, no cash/change will be given back. The remaining balance will be applied to your family’s food service account.
    • Food waste continues to be a problem at our schools. We ask you to discuss with your child/ren the importance of selecting only what they plan to eat for school meals to decrease waste.

    COMMUNICATIONS
Skylert will send an automated message to families notifying them of a negative balance each Monday morning. Modify your Skylert preferences in Skyward Family Access.

    MEAL BENEFITS
The application for educational benefits can be completed at any time throughout the school year, however the last day for households to submit the 2021-22 application for potentially being eligible for summer P-EBT benefits is September 3, 2021.
